  • Harrow Signs Laurens Jan Anjema

    Anjema signs with Harrow

    LJHarrow

Laurens Jan Anjema will become the new global ambassador of Harrow after signing a three year deal with the fast growing squash brand based in the United States.

The thirty-one year old from The Hague used his new racket, the Harrow Stealth, for the first time last weekend during the Dutch Squash Championships in 2014 in Amsterdam, in which he justified his seeding by winning his ninth consecutive national squash title by beating fellow Harrow player Piedro Schweeertman in four games in the final.

“I am very excited to be part of the Harrow team”, said the world number sixteen. “The first time I put the Harrow Stealth in my hands, I immediately had a great feeling. Good equipment is crucial for any professional athlete and it feels awesome to know that I don’t have to worry about this for the next couple of years”, added the Dutch ace.

"We are ecstatic to have a player of LJ's ability and global appeal on board. He has been a top player and worldwide favorite on the PSA Tour for years and we are confident he will continue to stay at the top of his game as he plays his way back into the top ten in the world rankings. We continue to innovate with new products and LJ will be at the forefront of this development as we eagerly work to expand our brand around the world", said Dave Rosen, Vice President of Racquet Sports at Harrow.

I'm back, back in Cali, Cali.

I doubted that I’d ever utter those words again. But alas, here we are, basking in the sunshine of the Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, California, miles upon miles from the blistering east coast cold of our new home in Lancaster, Pa - preparing for the incredible year ahead. The highlight of which is June’s 2014 World Cup in The Hague, Netherlands.

Change. It’s the one constant in the unpredictable world of sport. Over the years (I’m nearing my 10th on the National Team), I’ve learned that the thing about playing field hockey - for a living – is that success follows the laws of Darwin; survival, the ultimate form of success, is a function of adaptability.

In sport, especially team sport, there’s always an unforeseen change in plans – a last minute trek across country because of prolonged inclement weather; or a less than ideal circumstance – like sharing a house with 25 of your teammates for six weeks. These blips in the plan alter the course we envision for ourselves distracting us with new difficulties, and challenging us with harder terrains to navigate than previously known, or imagined.

The winners, the survivors, are not necessarily the more physically talented or naturally gifted. Unsurprisingly, they are the individuals and teams who approach their task with a resilient mindset; the ones who prepare for adversity, and come to expect it, understanding that a change in circumstance is not the same thing as a change in mission.

As I look forward to the exciting year ahead, and the difficult year behind us, I realize that I want to be the type of person who takes adversity in stride, solves unexpected problems, and thrives with challenge. Because at the days end, the mission is unchanging. Regardless of what you’ve endured, or what you are bound to endure, the task must be won.

    Position: Field Hockey Brand Manager

Fun Fact: NCAA National Champion at University of North Carolina

    What's in your workout bag...

Living at altitude means layers are essential.  Most workouts, whether playing hockey, running or biking include multiple layers. The Pulse Half Zip and Impulse Dri-Fit shirt make the perfect combination.  The Impulse is a great, loose fitting base layer that wiks away sweat and keeps me cool in the summer. Easily layered under the Pulse for chilly workouts makes it a year-round go to for me.  One of my favorite features of the Pulse is the stretchy material and slightly longer sleeves that allow me to tuck my hands inside for particularly cold mornings, then once I'm warmed up I can hike up the sleeves to my elbow, or shed the layer completely and tie it around my waist.

Which equipment item doesn't miss a practice..

My weapon of choice for the past year or so has been the RD8 Low Bow.  As a forward, quick stick skills and powerful, accurate shooting are key.  The RD8 provides me with plenty of power to get the ball past the keeper and at 550 grams the control is unbelievable.  I am a firm believer in comfort and protection so the Protec Shin Guard with two pairs of Intercept sleeves (one under, one over) is a no brainer for me.

Item that doesn't leave your side off the field..

My new obsession off the field is the Envy Women's carry-all bag.  Since I travel frequently for work, I figured I would mainly use it as a carry on when flying.  The laptop sleeve and multiple internal pockets allow me to stay organized when I'm on the road.  When I ditch the laptop to hit the gym or pack to head up to the mountains to ski the Envy seems to magically expand to fit everything I need to take with me.  It's extremely versatile and I get compliments on the classic all-black outside and bright blue liner every time I open it.
