Colorado field hockey off to tight start

The top teams in Colorado field hockey have started the season with a rash of close games and ties, suggesting a competitive race to the state title.

Last year’s state finalists were St. Mary’s Academy and Kent Denver. The defending state champs from St. Mary’s have gotten off to a solid start for new coach Karen Hutchinson, winning 2-1 over Colorado Academy and 4-3 over Cheyenne Mountain. Kent has tied its only game so far, a 3-3 game with Cherry Creek, and get a rematch with St. Mary’s on Sept. 23.

Creek’s record so far sounds like a Father’s Day gift list: tie, tie, tie. That’s right, they’ve wound up deadlocked with Smoky Hill (0-0), Cheyenne Mountain (2-2) and Kent (3-3). Speaking of Smoky Hill, they also thrashed Eaglecrest 8-0 on Sept. 5 and will be involved in the biggest game of this weekend when they host a noon match up Saturday (Sept. 12) with St. Mary’s.
