Harrow Sports Athlete Raneem El Welily Crowned 2016 Windy City Open Champion
Professional Squash World No. 3 Triumphs at WCO Two Years in a Row
Harrow Sports is proud to announce that Harrow Elite Team member; Professional Squash player Raneem El Welily is the 2016 Windy City Open (WCO) Champion. Making history at the 2015 Windy City Open World Series Event as the first Egyptian woman to win the title, Raneem became the defending champion late Wednesday evening in Chicago at the Professional Squash Association sanctioned tournament. In an impressive 3-1 triumph over winner of the most recent World Series event, Nour El Sherbini, Raneem came from behind to win in four games, 9-11, 11-6, 11-3, 11-6. Raneem uses Harrow’s Vapor Squash Racquet.
Ranked third in the world, this victory marks a return to form for the 27-year-old. It is the first PSA World Title for Raneem since September 2015, when she was ranked No. 1 in the world.
Raneem had this to say: “I’m lost for words right now…I never thought I’d be No.1 after winning here last year so I’m just going to take it one step at a time. It’s all about baby steps and taking it one match and one point at a time. That’s the strategy. I need to work hard to make sure I have that same attitude and hunger on court for the rest of the season.”
Raneem is a member of Harrow Sports’ ELITE Team; made up of the top Professional Squash Players from around the world. Raneem turned profession in 2002, winning the World Junior Championship in 2005 and 2007 before going on to win her first senior Tour title in 2009. Raneem continued to rise in the ranks, reaching World No. 2 in 2012, and completing the most successful year of her career in 2015; winning the Tournament of Champions, the Windy City Open, and the Alexandria International to close the gap and claim the No.1 spot in the world. She was named the PSA Women’s Player of the year for the 2014/15 season and in 2016, is ranked currently ranked No.3 in the world.
